NZ Defeats SA In Semifinal To Face India In Final: New Zealand defeated South Africa in the second semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in a somewhat one-sided affair. They will now face India in the final of this competition for all the glory.
The New Zealand Vs South Africa match was the second of two semifinals of CT 2025. The game was played in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and saw the Kiwis win the toss and decide to bat first on a batting-friendly surface. This one promised to be a high-scoring game, and oh, was it!

To open for the New Zealand Cricket Team came out openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. The two gave their team a decent start before Young was dismissed by Lungi Ngidi in the eighth over after scoring 21 off 23. Then came in Kane Williamson, who stitched together a brilliant and match-winning partnership with the young Ravindra.
The two men batted together for over 25 overs, in which the two nearly batted the game away from South Africa. First, the two men completed their 50s, and then, Rachin scored his second 100 of the tournament, scoring the first against Bangladesh. However, soon after reaching three digits, Rachin Ravindra got out at 108 in 101. At his dismissal, the score was 212/2 in the 34th over.
While a score of 350 was in sight, the BlackCaps had to play fast and well from this point to reach that score. And almost immediately, Kane Williamson took charge. The veteran batter scored some boundaries on his own way to a ton, which he reached by scoring a scoop four. He got out soon after, having scored 102 off 94.

But when wicketkeeper Tom Latham was dismissed cheaply, the team score came to 257/4 as the New Zealand innings threatened to slow down in its final stretch, but then Glenn Phillips came in. The all-rounder, along with Daryl Mitchell, built a partnership that ensured that their team would end up with a good score.
They batted for five overs and over 50 runs together. By the time Mitchell had been dismissed, just missing out on his half-century with an inning of 49 off 37, the Kiwis were 314/5. It was Glenn Phillips in the final few overs, scoring 49 in 27 deliveries, who took the New Zealand Cricket Team past the 350-run mark as the side eventually ended up at 362/6 at the end of their allotted 50 overs in this NZ vs SA semifinal.
In response, the South African inning threatened to fall apart right at the beginning as Ryan Rickelton was dismissed in the fifth over, scoring 17 in 12, scoring four boundaries, and looking good before his dismissal.
Then came a partnership that would be talked about for some time: captain Temba Bavuma had a 105-run partnership with Rassie van der Dussen. But the two men scored these runs in about 18 overs. Temba especially played slow, scoring 56 off 71 before getting out. By the time the skipper had been dismissed by Mitchell Santner, the Proteas were at 125/2 in the 23rd over while chasing 363.
The pressure mounted on van der Dussen and the incoming Aiden Markram, the former of whom got out soon after for 69 off 66. Heinrich Klassen then went out for cheap, scoring just three runs. By the time Markram was dismissed for 31 off 29, the match was all but over with South Africa at 189/5 at the end of the 33rd over, with 174 runs required in 17 overs and barely any batting order remaining.
Wiaan Mulder got out for cheap almost immediately after, leaving David Miller on the crease as the last hope alongside Marco Jansen. First Jansen, then Maharaj failed to support the veteran batter. So when No. 10 batter Kagiso Rabada understood the assignment of just staying on the crease, Miller could play his signature attacking shots, which he did.
While the match had already ended in spirit, David Miller’s fine attacking batting at the end kept the sparks lit. By the time the South African inning had ended, they were 312/9 and lost the match by 50 runs. However, David Miller scored what was the third inning of the match, doing so in 87 deliveries.
Rachin Ravindra was named the player of the match for scoring 108 and bowling a five-over spell of 1/20. Kane Williamson and captain Mitchell Santner were other standouts for the Kiwis, scoring 102 runs and bowling 3/43 in 10 overs, respectively.
For the South African Cricket Team, David Miller was the clear standout performer, scoring 100 runs in 67 deliveries and keeping the match at least partially interesting till the very end. The duo of Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada did fine, too, for the Proteas, taking three and two wickets, respectively, in 10 overs but going for around seven runs per over.
This New Zealand vs South Africa match ended in a one-sided win for the Kiwis. New Zealand will now face India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in the rematch of the final Group A match in this competition. The match will be played in the Dubai International Stadium on March 9.
