Nathan Lyon On Living Up To Shane Warne Legacy: Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon believes that he is still in the shadow of legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne and feels the pressure of living up to the latter’s legacy.
Lyon is one of the greatest Australian spinners of all time and one of the most consistent ones of his era. Having bowled for most of his career on the non-turning Aussie pitches, the off-spinner, on many occasions, has been the only tweaker on the team.
In these circumstances, Lyon has played 129 Test matches and taken 530 wickets and is considered one of the greats of this era.
But no Australian spinner can go anywhere without comparisons to Shane Warne. Warnie is the greatest spin bowler of all time, alongside Muttiah Muralitharan. Not only could the legendary leggie spin the ball off any pitch, but he was the type of bowler who could clean the opposition up on his day.
Warne, who retired from international cricket in 2007, played 145 Tests and took a whopping 708 wickets, the second most in the format’s history right behind Murali.

Nathan Lyon, who made his debut in 2011, four years after Warne’s retirement, took a fifer on his Test debut. Despite being one of the best red-ball bowlers of his era, he still feels that he lives in the shadow of Shane Warne. In a recent interview with Sky Cricket, he said.
“I still feel in the shadow of Shane Warne now, and I’m 129 Test matches in with 530 wickets. The thing is, I’m happy with that, and I’m comfortable with that now. A lot of us felt the pressure of Shane Warne’s shadow… and it probably took me a good five, six, or seven years to understand that pressure is a privilege. And if you’ve got pressure, you’re OK; you’re doing OK; enjoy it.”
Lyon then continued to suggest that he would never live up to the legacy of Warne and went on to claim that the leggie is the greatest to ever do it.
“I’m never going to be able to do what Warnie did. Warnie’s once-in-a-generation; he’s the greatest to play the game in my opinion, and all I want to do is make my family proud and make Shane Warne proud and just go out there and compete,” said Lyon.
Nathan Lyon will next be seen representing Australia in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, which will be played in Australia from November to January. He has the most wickets in the history of Tests between these two powerhouses, 116 in 26 games.
