Italian club and former Serie A winners Napoli are pursuing Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay in what is seen by many as a surprising and unexpected move.
The Scottish midfielder has spent his football career with United. This includes his youth career. Joining the youth academy of the Red Devils at the age of six, he made his senior team debut at the age of 2 in 2017.
Since then, McTominay has scored 29 and assisted eight goals in 253 games for the Manchester-based club. Last season, he emerged as one of the most crucial players in the squad, scoring 10 and assisting three goals in 43 games in 2023-24.
The 27-year-old, who represented Scotland at the 2024 UEFA Euros, will see his contract expire with United next summer. With a year left on his contract, rumors and speculation about his future have emerged. Several sides across Europe are thought to be looking for his signature. These include Everton, Fenerbahce, Fulham, Brentford, and Galatasaray.

But one team that has surprisingly entered this conversation is Napoli. The 2022-23 Serie A champions. The club has signed famed and controversial manager Antonio Conte to lead the club to another successful season. So it has been surprising that a team under Conte has been relatively quiet in the transfer market.
With star-striker Victor Osimhen reportedly leaving ahead of the start of the next season, Napoli has only signed centre-backs Alejandro Buongiorne and Rafa Marin.
Even if Scott McTominay is on their radar, the Italians need a quality replacement for Osimhen, who was among the best attacking players in the world in the 2022-23 season.
Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has been busy this transfer window. After winning the FA Cup in an otherwise disappointing season, United opened the 2024-25 season by losing in the Community Shield final to Manchester City via penalties (7-6) after a 1-1 draw.
In this transfer window, they have signed Bologna’s Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, Lille centre-back Leny Yoro, and star centre-back Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich in what might be the club’s most crucial signing in years.
