Mumbai Indians fans angry on Hardik Pandya: Mumbai Indians’ new captain Hardik Pandya and head coach Mark Boucher are getting torn apart on social media for their lack of a proper statement about former captain Rohit Sharma in the pre-tournament press conference.
The outrage among MI and Rohit fans has been so huge since Monday that they trended #RIPHardikPandya on Twitter (now known as X).
Four days out from the start of the IPL 2024, Pandya and Boucher attended a press conference. In it, they were asked directly about the reason for the change in captaincy by the franchise—taking away the captaincy from a man who led them to five IPL titles and is still the India captain—and giving it to someone who was just returning after spending two seasons at another franchise, albeit two highly successful seasons as Gujarat Titans’ captain.
Not only Boucher and Pandya didn’t respond to this question, but the pair simply looked at the manager to veer away from the topic. The manager then asked the journalists to only ask questions about the upcoming season.
This non-response from Boucher and Hardik Pandya irked MI and Rohit fans. They are upset at the treatment and disrespect Sharma is getting from the franchise, despite bringing all the glory of MI in IPL.

Fans lashed out at Hardik Pandya and Mark Boucher with the #RIPHardikPandya trend on Twitter.
In the trade window after the IPL 2023 final and before the IPL 2024 auction, the Mumbai Indians traded in Hardik from Gujarat Titans. It was an interesting decision made by Hardik, as he had led GT to two consecutive finals—winning one and losing one—and was starting to build a team and a legacy for himself after leaving MI, where he spent seven seasons from 2015 to 2021.
But perhaps the lure of a big brand like the Mumbai Indians and the reported pre-condition of captaincy that he had put in the agreement, apart from the insane money that he would have gotten through the trade, brought him back to where it all started for the Baroda all-rounder.
While Rohit has lost the MI captaincy, he still remains India’s captain in all three formats. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has already confirmed that Sharma will lead the side in the T20 World Cup in June.
Mumbai’s first game, interestingly, is against Hardik’s previous franchise, the Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad. Everyone is keen to see what kind of reception Hardik gets at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
