MSD Only Batter With 100 Runs In Death IPL 2025: We are now way past the halfway mark in IPL 2025. With 40 matches of this season of the Indian Premier League in the yearbooks, many stats and facts have emerged that paint an interesting picture about how the season is going so far. It is clear that the bowlers are doing much better this year, especially in the death overs.
One of the most staggering stats about IPL 2025 is that Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is the only batter to have scored over 100 runs in the final four overs of the innings after 40 matches have elapsed this season, as compared to six batters having done so in 2024.
It is to no one’s surprise that IPL 2024 was a statistical anomaly. On account of most matches being played on flat pitches, coupled with the revised approach by the teams, scores of over 200 were about average, and scores above 250, which were almost unheard of in T20 cricket before, were semi-regular that season.

The 43-year-old veteran wicketkeeper/batter has had to take up the captaincy of CSK after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament with an injury. So far, he has scored 134 runs this season in eight matches. 110 of which have been scored between overs 17-20 at a strike rate of 186.44. So far, he is the only batter this season to have scored this many runs in the death overs.
Compare it to 2024, where six batters had scored 100 runs in the death till the 40-match mark. RCB’s Dinesh Karthik had scored 151 at a strike rate of over 250, LSG’s Nicholas Pooran scored 129 at 179.16 S/R, GT’s Rahul Tewatia scored 122 at 187.69, MI’s Tim David scored 110 at 196.2, SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen scored 107 at 254.76, and DC’s Tristan Stubbs scored 110 runs in the final four at a scintillating strike rate of 297.29.
This is a symptom of a bigger trend across the league. First is how teams are now treating the powerplay overs like death overs and going after bowlers right from the get-go, which, admittedly, they did last season as well. But secondly, just fewer runs are being scored than this season.
In 2024, the milestone of 250 runs was breached on eight occasions throughout the whole season. In 2025, however, with more than half of a season being behind us, the 250-run mark has been crossed only once.

Run rates in the death, after 40 matches, are down in 2025 compared to 2024, 11.18 as compared to 11.89. And teams scoring 50+ runs in the last four overs is down too, 14 times compared to 26.
Finally, we should also discuss why none of the players who scored 100 runs in the death till the 40th match in IPL 2024 did that in 2025. Dinesh Karthik has retired, and Rahul Tewatia has not gotten a chance with the bat much due to his team’s fine form. Tim David is close to the mark, but has been batting a lot more before the death overs.
Tristan Stubbs is not in the form he was last season, and neither is Heinrich Klaasen. And finally, Nicholas Pooran might be in the form of his life in IPL 2025 and leading the race for the Orange Cap, but he is coming out to bat at No. 3 for the Lucknow Super Giants and has not been batting much in the death overs.
In comparison to all these men, MS Dhoni is looking in fine touch and is slogging well. But most importantly, he almost exclusively comes out to death after the 17th over.
