CSK has not gotten off to the best start to this season. While the team did win their first game against the Mumbai Indians, since then, they have been defeated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the first time in Chennai since 2008, beaten by the Rajasthan Royals, thrashed by the Delhi Capitals in Chennai for the first time since 2010, and beaten by the Punjab Kings.
With just one win in five games, only two points, and a poor net run rate, the Super Kings are currently ninth on the points table.
There are a lot of problems with this team. Their veteran spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravidra Jadeja is not doing great; the top order is failing to score the runs, and so is the middle order. There is also a lack of acceleration while batting, and the fielding has been horrid as well.
All these issues have been a bane to this side under captain Gaikwad, who is captaining the side in his second season and missed out on the playoffs in 2024. Even his season as a player has not been anything promising. In the five matches played so far, he has scored 122 runs at an average of 24/40 and a strike rate of 150.62. While he has scored two half-centuries, he has been surrounded by players who are just not scoring any significant runs.
Now, Chennai has suffered a massive blow. Captain Gaikwad has been ruled out for the rest of the IPL 2025 season due to an elbow fracture. However, in what might come as good news to the franchise’s fans, MS Dhoni will take the reins as the new skipper.
Dhoni was the captain of the Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2023. In the 13 seasons he led the side, he took them to 11 playoffs and won the title five times, making him the most successful captain in IPL history.
At the age of 43, MS will take the captaincy of CSK once again. The last time this team tried changing captains in 2020, Dhoni had to take the role from Ravindra Jadeja mid-season due to poor results.
Dhoni has been having a topsy-turvy season. While he has shown promise coming in late to bat, he has not been able to win games for his side. As for CSK’s next game, they will face the Kolkata Knight Riders at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, April 11.
