The Super Kings have not gotten off to a great start in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. Since winning their opening match of the season against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, CSK have lost their two previous matches on the trot. First, they lost to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the first time in Chennai in 17 years. Then came a loss to the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.
In the three games they have played so far, the five-time champions have won only one and lost two games. With two points and a negative net run rate, they are currently eighth on the points table.

The ongoing season is the second year CSK is being captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Maharashtra-based batter has been a star performer for the franchise for five seasons now and was awarded the captaincy in 2024. In his first season as the team leader, he led the team to a fifth-place finish.

In the team’s most recent game against RR, skipper Gaikwad was hit on his arm by a delivery from pacer Tushar Dehpande. He did look uncomfortable after that moment throughout the match.
Now, news is coming out of the CSK camp that Ruturaj is still recovering from his injury. And if he is not fit by their next game against DC on Saturday, it appears that the team’s former captain, MS Dhoni, might take the reins for the day.
Dhoni is the most successful captain in IPL history. Not only has he won the most matches and made the most playoffs as the skipper of the Super Kings, but he has also won the joint-most titles while leading the franchise, five.

CSK batting coach Michael Hussey told the Indian Express that while the call about Gaikwad’s participation in the game against the Capitals will be taken on the day of the match, the team camp is confident that their skipper will be fit to lead them in the CSK vs DC match.
“Yeah, we’re hoping he’s going to try and have a bat today for training. And, yeah, it’s still a little bit sore, but it’s improving every day. So, we’re very hopeful, very confident that he’ll be fine for tomorrow,” said Hussey.
The former Australian batter-turned-coach also hinted that if Gaikwad does not take the field on Saturday, a certain wicketkeeper-batter might lead the team on the field once again, saying,
“But we’ve got some young guy coming through. He’s behind the stumps. Maybe he can do a good job. I’m not sure. He’s got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it. But I’m not exactly sure, to be honest.”
While the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have formerly captained teams in the IPL, can also lead CSk in the next match, Dhoni just feels like a natural choice. It might be the last time the legendary wicketkeeper and captain leads any side on the cricket pitch.
