MS Dhoni is one of the greatest Indian cricketers of all time. He is the most prolific wicketkeeper/batter and the most successful national team captain in terms of trophies.
Dhoni made his India debut in December 2006 during an ODI series on tour to Bangladesh. Despite underwhelming performances, he was picked for the subsequent tour to Pakistan, where he scored his first century, a blistering 123-ball 148. In 2005, within a year of his international debut, he made his highest ODI score of 183* against Sri Lanka.

MS Dhoni Career Overview
In 2007, with most senior players skipping the first-ever World T20 (T20 World Cup), MSD was picked to captain the team, and he won the whole competition. In about a year’s time, he was made the captain of the Indian Cricket Team across all formats.
Dhoni had developed an image of being one of the best finishing batters in limited-overs cricket by this point. And he was about to add the moniker of ‘Captain Cool’ to his list of accolades. First, in 2009, he took India to the top of the World Test ranking for the first time ever. Then, he led the Men in Clue to the ODI World Cup title in 2011 at home, playing a Player of the Match inning in the final.
By this time, the Indian Premier League had started in 2008. MS became the most expensive player in the first-ever auction when he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings and made the captain of the franchise, taking the team to the final in the inaugural year.
By 2011, MSD and CSK had won two titles. Now, in 2025, the Super Kings are the most successful IPL team with five titles under their belt. For all the glory he brought to Chennai and CSK, Dhoni is now also known as Thala (leader) by his fanbase.
Dhoni retired from Test cricket mid-series during the 2014-15 Norder-Gavaskar Trophy, gave up the limited-overs captaincy in 2017, and played his last match in 2019, the heartbreaking semi-final loss for the Indian Cricket Team to New Zealand in the ODI World Cup that year. Since then, he comes out of his domestic life once a year and plays in the IPL for CSK.
