Most Successful Coach in IPL History: Coaches in cricket often go under the radar as the spotlight shines mostly on the captains and star players. But when things go south, often it is the coach who is sacked as the scapegoat while the captain is retained.
A head coach plays an integral role in the success of a team on the field by maintaining the best possible environment in the dressing room.
In a high-voltage tournament, such as the IPL, the coach needs to be on his toes all the time. Since there isn’t much time for coaching technical aspects to the players in the IPL, the focus of the head coach remains on the dressing room atmosphere and tactics.
Providing security to fringe players is important for a coach to earn their trust so as to allow them to play with freedom. In the IPL, only a few coaches have had long stints, while others have faced the axe in two of three seasons of underperformance and not delivering as per the owner’s expectations.
In this article, we will see the 3 most successful coaches in IPL history.

Who is the most successful coach in IPL History?
Stephen Fleming
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming is the most successful coach in IPL history, having coached CSK to five IPL trophies along with two Champions League titles. Fleming played for CSK in the first two seasons, and since the third season, he’s been their coach.
CSK won their maiden IPL title in 2010, which was Fleming’s first season as their coach. While MS Dhoni hogs the limelight on the field, Stephen Fleming does his work silently off the field.
Fleming and Dhoni were together at Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were suspended.
Mahela Jayawardene
Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene played in the IPL till 2013. Four years later, in 2017, Jayawardene was appointed as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, replacing Ricky Ponting. Jayawardene delivered a title instantly for Mumbai, the third title of the franchise.
Even as CSK returned from a two-year suspension and won the 2018 IPL trophy, Jayawardene’s Mumbai Indians went back-to-back in 2019 and 2020 to seal their fourth and fifty IPL titles. MI defeated CSK in the 2019 final. Under Jayawardene, MI became only the second team in IPL history, after CSK in 2011, to successfully defend their IPL crown.
Ahead of the IPL 2023 season, Jayawardene was promoted to the Global Head of Performance role at the Mumbai Indians to oversee their sister franchises in the SA20, MLC, and ILT20 leagues, while South African Mark Boucher was named the new MI head coach.
Trevor Bayliss
Australia’s Trevor Bayliss is the third-most successful coach in the IPL for the two titles that KKR won under his coaching stint in 2012 and 2014. Bayliss and then-captain Gautam Gambhir ended KKR’s IPL trophy drought in 2012 and won their second title two years later. In 2014, KKR won their last 7 league matches to reach the playoffs, where they defeated Punjab in Qualifier 1 and then in the final.
Interestingly, Bayliss left KKR right after the 2014 IPL. Years later, he was the head coach of Eoin Morgan’s England team that won the 2019 World Cup.
