skw: Women’s ODI, Most runs by a woman batter in a calendar year in WODIs, most runs in Women’s ODI, ICC Women’s World Cup
India women’s team’s vice-captain and senior opener, Smriti Mandhana, created a new benchmark in women’s cricket on Sunday, October 12, 2025, by becoming the first batter to touch the 1000-run mark in a calendar year in Women’s ODIs.
She achieved this feat during India’s league stage match against Australia at the ongoing ICC Womens World Cup 2025 in Visakhapatnam.
Mandhana, along with young right-handed opener Pratika Rawal, gave India a solid start against the defending champions after Alyssa Healy had won the toss and inserted India in.
Aged 29 and at the peak of her powers, the Mumbai-born Smriti Mandhana is having a scintillating year with the bat in the 50-over international format.
Mandhana took 18 innings in 2025 to cross the 1000-run figure in WODIs. She’s averaging over 55 and has notched up four centuries and three fifties and looks set to get a milestone in her current innings against Australia in Vizag.
Earlier, she had broken the record of former Australia captain Belinda Clark for the most runs in a calendar year in Women’s ODI. Clark had held this long-standing record since 1997, when she ransacked 970 runs in 14 innings at an average of 80, cracking three centuries and four half-centuries, including a record-setting score of 229*, which was broken 21 years later in 2018 by New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr.
Most runs by a woman batter in a calendar year in WODIs ft Smriti Mandhana:
- Smriti Mandhana – 1014* (2025)
- Belinda Clark – 970 (1997)
- Laura Wolvaardt – 882 (2022)
- Debbie Hockley – 880 (1997)
- Amy Satterthwaite – 853 (2016)
Last month, against Australia in Delhi, Mandhana had slammed a 45-ball century, thus attaining the record of the second-fastest century in Women’s ODIs. The stylish left-handed India opener, Mandhana has hit 13 hundreds in WODIs so far, the joint-second-most in WODIs, sitting alongside New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and only two centuries behind the record-holder, Australia’s Meg Lanning.
However, despite her stunning form in the lead-up to the ICC Womens World Cup 2025, Mandhana struggled in India’s first three matches, recording scores of 8, 23, and 23.
She has now got a strong start against Australia, racing to 32 runs off 31 balls at the time of writing. The Indian team and their fans would be hoping that the senior opener makes this start count and converts it into a significant score, one that could spur her on for having a terrific campaign.
