Mohit Sharma Recalls Last Over Of IPL 2023 Final: Indian pace bowler Mohit Sharma recently opened up about Gujarat Titans’ loss to the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 final, how the loss was heartbreaking for the entire team, and what the coaching staff told him about his last over of the game.
The 2023 IPL final was one for the ages. Gujarat Titans, having won the league in their first year of existence in 2022, made it to their second final in a row to face the then-four-time champs Chennai Super Kings.
The Titans batted first at their home ground of Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, and scored 214 runs. Sai Sudharsan scored a magnificent 96 off 47 as he barely missed out on a ton. Then, the rain arrived.
In what became a rain-affected match, the second inning was reduced to just 15 overs, with the target being 171. The Super Kings got off to a fine start, as the opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway put up 70 runs in the powerplay. The Chennai-based team whittled down the score, but much hope was lost when MS Dhoni got out for a duck.
On the last two balls of the match, 10 runs were required, and Mohit Sharma was bowling to Ravindra Jadeja. Sharma, that season, had made a brilliant comeback, taking 27 wickets in 14 matches, the second most in that season.
However, on the last two deliveries, Jadeja hit a six and a four to clinch the victory from the jaws of defeat as CSK won their fifth IPL title.
On the other hand, after a brilliant individual and team season, Mohit Sharma could not finish the job from a point where nine times out of ten, one would back the bowler to come out on top. That too after giving only three runs on the first four deliveries of that over.

Mohit was bought by the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 mega-auction for Rs. 2.2 crores. In a recent interview with News18, he recalled that heartbreaking last over, how he was told by the team leadership that if something like that happened, maybe a win was not in the team’s destiny.
“What happened in talks with Hardik, Ashish Nehra, Vikram Solanki, and all the players of the team. Everyone said that it was not in our destiny. If we play 100 out of 100, then maybe we will win 95 times and lose only 5 times. So the scenario of losing 5 times, let’s name it destiny and cut the bill, because why get so worried?” The veteran pacer said.
He then went on to say that no player or coach blamed him for the loss and had very good things to say about him following the season, he said.
“So I do whatever is in my hands. First of all, everyone said very good things. No one said that one person does not make you lose a game, and one person does not alone win you a game. It’s a team game, right? So if anyone comes and blames you that you put the balls wrong, then maybe I would have shown him how my whole season went.”
Mohit Sharma will represent the Capitals in IPL 2025. His and his team’s campaign will start on Monday, March 24, as the Delhi Capitals will face the Lucknow Super Giants at the AVA/VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam.
