Australia came out to bat first as Travis Head opened with youngster Cooper Connolly. Connolly struggled in the beginning and got out for a duck when he was caught behind off Mohammed Shami’s delivery in the third over.
From this point, Head partnered up with Steve Smith to give the Indian bowling lineup some trouble. Travis Head scored 39 off 33 before getting out to Varun Chakravarthy in the ninth over, getting caught on long on by Shubman Gill.

Captain Steve Smith then took charge of anchoring the inning. He, along with Marnus Labuschagne, then batted together for about 15 overs before, in the 23rd over, Marnus was caught in front of the wicket by Ravindra Jadeja.
For all this time, Smith was troubling the Indian bowling, scoring runs, and surviving some good chances. He first scored his 50 and then seemed to head towards his 100.
After getting to his personal score of 70, it only seemed like a matter of time before he would reach into the triple digits. But Mohammed Shami had different plans. As in the 37th over, he bowled a yorker that Smith looked to walk down the crease but missed the ball and was bowled, getting out for 73 off 96, and the team score was 198/5.
