MI vs CSK Match Highlights And Report-IPL: Former CSK captain MS Dhoni went bang, bang, bang in the last over of the innings, smashing 20*(4) and it proved to be the difference eventually as CSK beat MI by exactly 20 runs, with CSK’s bowlers holding their nerves amid Rohit Sharma’s century.
On the chase of 207, former MI skipper Rohit carried the bat, scoring 105* runs in 63 balls. But his century went in vain as no other MI batter could bat for long enough with him to pip MI over the line in a tall chase.

Both the night games at the Wankhede before this match were won by the chasing side. So it wasn’t a surprise at all when Hardik Pandya elected to bowl first after winning the toss.
CSK sprang up a surprise by sending Ajinkya Rahane to open alongside Rachin Ravindra, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad padded up and sitting in the dugout. The move backfired as Rahane got out for 5 runs in 8 balls to Gerald Coetzee.
Gaikwad and Rachin shrugged off the early loss of Rahane’s wicket and got going immediately to boss the rest of the powerplay overs. The pair added 52 runs in 37 balls; the partnership was broken by Shreyas Gopal.
Then came a blitzkrieg from Shivam Dube and Gaikwad. The duo went at a strike rate of 200 to forge a stunning 90-run partnership in 45 balls, during which Gaikwad was dropped by former MI captain Rohit at deep mid-wicket.
Hardik wrested some momentum back from CSK with the wickets of Gaikwad (69 off 40 with 5 fours and 5 sixes) and Daryl Mitchell, who simply isn’t able to get going in this IPL. The Kiwi batter scored 17 runs in 14 balls with one four.
With four balls left in the innings, in came the showstopper: MS Dhoni, the man everyone was waiting to see in what could very well be his last IPL appearance at the Wankhede Stadium.
While Dube stood at the non-striker’s end, having cracked 66* runs in 38 balls, Dhoni smashed three consecutive sixes on the first three balls he faced off Pandya. Wankhede was a complete pandemonium, and so was social media. A couple of runs on the last ball of CSK’s innings meant they ended with 206 on the board.

In reply, MI once again got off to a rollicking start from Rohit and Ishan Kishan. The pair dominated the powerplay and were right along the required rate in their partnership of 70 runs in 7.1 overs. Matheesha Pathirana, who missed the last two matches due to injury, got Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who bagged a second duck in three matches, in the same over to dent MI.
Tilak Varma and Rohit built a strong partnership of 60 runs in 38 balls. Pathirana returned to dismiss Tilak for 31 (20). From thereon, CSK bowlers slowly pulled the game back toward them.
Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande bowled two excellent overs, 15th and 16th, in which they conceded only five runs combined in 12 balls, and Deshpande scalped Hardik (2 off 6).
With 72 needed in 24 balls, Tim David walloped a couple of sixes to Mustafizur, but the Bangladeshi pacer had the last laugh as the Australian was caught at long-off. During all this, Rohit struggled for timing and big hits as CSK pacers took the pace off the ball, and kept the ball well outside the off-stump, and that further hurt MI.
The killing blow to MI came when Pathirana bowled Romario Shepherd in the 18th over, and that was that. Formalities remained: even as Rohit reached his second IPL century, CSK’s victory was all but confirmed. Eventually, Dhoni’s 20*(4) proved to be the difference!
Score summary: Chennai Super Kings 206/4 in 20 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 69, Hardik Pandya 2/43); Mumbai Indians 186/6 in overs (Rohit Sharma 105*, Matheesha Pathirana 4/28). CSK defeated MI by 20 runs.
