In a season of disappointments, Dewald Brevis gave the Chennai Super Kings team management and their fans something to cheer about as he produced a thrilling innings on his CSK debut.
Brevis, who had gone unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, was roped in by CSK as a replacement for the injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh. He made his CSK debut on Friday evening against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in front of CSK’s home crowd at the Chepauk.
SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first. Once again, as has been the theme this season, CSK batsmen failed to get going and were stifled by the disciplined SRH bowling attack.
While Shaik Rasheed and Sam Curran got out for single-digit scores, young Ayush Mhatre whacked 30 off 19. However, Mhatre couldn’t carry on for long.
Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda, too, failed to collect boundaries regularly. While they stayed at the crease for a while, all three of them had strike rates below 140.
At the opposite end, though, stood the bright spot for CSK in Dewald Brevis. The young South African showed why he is dubbed “Baby AB” by the fans. With his fearless approach, sweet timing, and brute force, Brevis smashed four sixes and a four in his entertaining innings of 42 runs off 25 balls.
He could have gone on to pile up a much bigger score but was dismissed in the 13th over of CSK’s innings by Harshal Patel, the credit for which goes to Kamindu Mendis, who took a mind-blowing, diving catch at long off.
Brevis smashed a length ball outside off from Patel to the left of long off. Mendis lunged towards the ball and was mid-air, like Superman, as he completed an unbelievable catch.

Meanwhile, Harshal delivered a brilliant performance as well, claiming figures of 4/58. CSK ended their innings at 154, an under-par score. SRH would be hoping that their destructive opening combo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, the Travishek, gets going in this chase.
