McSweeney On Struggles Of Facing Jasprit Bumrah: Australian opener Nathan McSweeney recently discussed how before playing in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he was not too worried about facing Jasprit Bumrah but immediately discovered why the Indian pacer is among the greatest bowlers on the planet today.
McSweeney was brought into the Australian Cricket Team to open during the BGT. He played the first three matches of the series before being replaced by Sam Konstas due to poor performances.
In the three matches he played, the 26-year-old batted and faced Bumrah on five occasions and was dismissed by him on four occasions. He played six innings in that series and scored 10 or under on five occasions. In six innings, McSweeney scored 72 runs at an average of 14.40 before losing his place in the side.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah had a series to remember. In the five matches he played, the ace pacer took 32 wickets at a ridiculous average of 13.06 and was named the Player of the Series despite India losing 3-1.
In a recent appearance on the Willow Talk podcast, Nathan McSweeney opened up about his experience of facing Bumrah, how before the series he was naive in believing that he could handle the Indian pacer, and how the Mumbai Indians bowler is incredibly skilled, saying,
“Yeah, tough work is probably an understatement. He’s an incredible bowler. I was probably naive going into it, never having faced him before, and (thinking) he’d be fine. But he’s an incredible bowler that has a great skill and just relentless ability to pitch the ball in the area where you don’t want as a batter.”

The Aussie batter then went on to say that the only bit of confidence he had during the series was due to him knowing that it was not only him who was struggling against Bumrah, as all his teammates did as well.
“So, it was a very tough challenge but also gave me a hope that no one kind of had great success against him and everyone was trying to tackle him at the same time and no one was playing him with ease, which gave me a little bit of confidence,” he said.
Despite poor performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, Nathan McSweeney was picked for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka earlier this year but did not get to play a match as Usman Khawaja opened alongside Travis Head against the Lankan Lions.
