Maxwell Recalls When Virat Kohli Blocked Him: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell recalled an incident where he found out that Virat Kohli had blocked him on Instagram for mocking him during a Test match.
Maxwell has been a mainstay of the Aussie national team for over a decade now. While he is a white-ball expert, he has also played a few Test matches as well. However, he hasn’t played red-ball cricket for the national team since 2017.
He played two matches in the 2017 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. One of these was the fourth match of the series being played at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.
While fielding on Day One of the Test, the then-Indian captain Virat Kohli’s shoulder was hurting. He massaged his shoulder and gestured towards it, showing discomfort. The next day it was Australia’s turn to bowl. While fielding, Maxwell mocked Virat, mimicking his right shoulder and clutching it as Kohli did.
Maxwell Recalls When Virat Kohli Blocked Him
Back then, the 36-year-old played for the Kings XI Punjab (now the Punjab Kings). But come 2021, he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) for a massive price of Rs. 14.25 crore.
At this point, Virat was the popular captain of RCB. Not only had he been captaining the side for 7-8 years, but he was also the most popular and fan-favourite player in the team. So now that Maxwell had been bought by the team, he looked up the skipper on Instagram to throw him a follow.
But when he searched Kohli’s Instagram account, it did not appear for him. This was a sign that the then-Indian captain had blocked the Aussie. When asked whether he had been blocked by Kohli on Instagram, the skipper told Maxwell that he did so following the mocking incident in 2017.
On a recent appearance at the LiSTNR podcast, the Australian all-rounder narrated this incident, recalling how he was blocked by the veteran Indian batter.
“When I turned up for the pre-IPL training camp, we obviously got chatting and spent a fair bit of time training together as you do. So I go to his social media, follow him. Didn’t even think about it before that. Never really crossed my mind. I was like ‘I can’t find him’. Then I went and asked him ‘Have you blocked me on Instagram?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah probably. It was when you mocked me during that Test match. I think I got the sh*** and decided to block you,” recalled Maxwell.
We are now heading into the IPL 2025 mega auction. Before the auction, teams can retain up to six players. Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell have been teammates for three seasons now. And while Kohli will surely be retained by RCB, Maxwell’s future is up in the air.
