Matthew Hayden comments on Team India: Matthew Hayden said that the inclusion of a player like Tilak Varma into the squad would put pressure on frontline batters like Suryakumar Yadav for good.

According to him, this would cater to not only this World Cup but also the next World Cup. He was speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards ceremony. “We’ve seen the class of Tilak Varma. I think it’s a good strategy in terms of not just this World Cup but even potentially getting into the next World Cup as well. The great thing about India is that it’s got a really solid one-two-three combination. Similar to Australia, actually, when you look at their last four or five months, they’ve had a really good and strong – what we like to call – the engine room. And then they’ve got some good problems to solve through the middle order.”

As Matthew Hayden comments on Team India, he thinks that putting pressure on youngsters would help them improve their performance. Especially Suryakumar Yadav, who is one of the most talented batters in India with his 360-degree shot capability, has been in and out of form. Hayden thinks that the new strategy would help him stay more consistent with the team.
“And if they can fill spots with talented young players like Tilak Varma, put pressure on someone like Suryakumar Yadav, I think that’s a good strategy. Keep everyone honest on the side and performing. So not a bad move. I think it’s a great side.”
Tilak Varma has yet to wear the ODI jersey for India. His call-up to the side is fueled by the incredible display in the T20I series against West Indies. Though India lost the series due to shattered middle-order batting, Tilak was one of the positives India took out of the series. His arrival at the ODIs will surely elevate the competition in India’s already stacked batting lineup.

‘Bumrah’s Injury Could be a Positive’
Matthew Hayden comments on Team India: Hayden, speaking about the injuries of senior players, believes that India could take some positives out of them. He sees it as an increased chance for the youngsters to crash into the team. He also believes that this could potentially challenge senior players to secure their place in the lineup.
“In the landscape of modern cricket now, you’re going to get injuries. We’ve seen that with Jasprit Bumrah, and we’ve seen the emergence of players in and around him who have had an opportunity because he hasn’t been playing. They look at their bench strength as much as they look at their playing makeup because ultimately you’re going to be challenged.”
He compared this situation with Australia’s 2013 squad.
“When I look back at the World Cup campaigns that I was a part of, I remember Warne was out with a drug-related incident, and then Hogg comes into the side and has an unbelievable series in South Africa. So as much as we’d love to see superstars feature in World Cups, the outliers tend to be those players that might win you a World Cup. It might be Ishan Kishan, for example. He might have an unbelievable World Cup and blast everyone away. The selectors don’t write their names down first, but they have something special and they can deliver it on a World Cup stage.”

Hayden also mentioned that the current No. 4 conundrum would be tested and solved in the Asia Cup, ahead of the most anticipated ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. “The Asia Cup is kind of where you’re going to see a lot more answers to those questions,” he said. And the home-like conditions in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, in terms of pitch and weather, would absolutely train the players for the World Cup.
“Playing in their home conditions, in the build-up to the World Cup – the World Cup’s on our doorstep – that’s about as good as you get from the subcontinent teams, playing in Sri Lanka, in Pakistan, ahead of an enormous campaign here in India. There’s no question that you’re going to have bench players playing in this World Cup. Your outliers are as important as your key players. And it’s in your favor”.
