Matthew Breetzke Scored 150 On ODI Debut: South African National Cricket Team batter Matthew Brezeteke made his ODI debut today in a tri-series match against New Zealand. In what will go into the history books as the highest score on debut in ODIs, the opener scored 150 runs, utterly dismantling the Kiwi bowling attack.
Today is match two of the Pakistan/South Africa/New Zealand tri-series, being played in Pakistan ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The South Africa vs New Zealand match saw NZ win the toss and decide to bowl first at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The Proteas got off to a measured start, scoring a few boundaries but not scoring too quickly. Then, in just the eighth over of the match, captain Temba Bavuma was dismissed by pace bowler Will O’Rourke.

Jason Smith then came into bat and stitched together a 93-run partnership with Brezeteke. By the time Smith got out right at the 25-over mark, South Africa’s score was 130/2.
Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne then came in and only lasted a few balls before getting out. And then Wiaan Mulder came out to bat, and unlike the previous two-run partnership, the Breetzke/Mulder partnership was going to save the match for Bavuma’s men.

The two batted together for the next 19 overs and scored 131 runs together. During this partnership, Matthew Breetzke, who was already batting at 50, went on to score a 100, and then went to the next milestone and scored 150 runs in 148 deliveries before being dismissed by Matt Henry.
A fine 64 off 60 by Mulder was enough for South Africa to finish their inning at 304/6 in this NZ vs SA ODI.
As for Breetzke, not only did he have a dream debut, but it was also the most successful debut for a batter in ODI history. With his inning of 11 fours and five sixes, the 3-year-old scored the most runs in an ODI debut for a player, beating a 47-year-old record set by Desmond Haynes, who scored 148 on his debut for the West Indies against Australia in 1978.
Matthew Breetzke will represent the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, having been bought by the franchise in last year’s auction for Rs. 75 lakh.
As for South Africa, they need a win in this South Africa Vs New Zealand match to start the competition off right. With just days remaining for the 2025 Champions Trophy, winning this tournament is crucial for all the teams involved.
