Matheesha Pathirana injury news: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are at the receiving end of multiple injury news even before the start of the IPL 2024 season. After Devon Conway was ruled out of the first half of the season due to a thumb injury, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is set to miss a few games due to a hamstring injury.
For the initial phase of the season, CSK captain MS Dhoni won’t have the services of his new star death bowler, Matheesha Pathirana.
The 21-year-old Sri Lankan speedster with a slingy action suffered a hamstring injury in the 2nd T20I against Bangladesh in Sylhet earlier this month. He bowled 3.4 overs in the match before leaving the field while clutching his hamstring and subsequently missing the third T20I.
Matheesha Pathirana Injury News: CSK to Miss Their Star Death Pacer
Pathirana has since been working with the Sri Lankan team physio, but he will be unable to recover in time for the IPL and will miss at least the first few games for CSK. He will join the franchise in Chennai only after getting complete clearance from the SLC.
Matheesha Pathirana had a breakthrough IPL season last year for the Super Kings. He was the best death-over bowler in the tournament, picking up 18 wickets. In the final five-over phase of the matches in IPL 2023, Pathirana maintained an outstanding economy of 8, which was the best among bowlers who bowled a minimum of 90 balls in the death overs.
The absence of Pathirana is likely to pave the way for Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman to start for CSK. Like Pathirana, Mustafizur is also a renowned death-overs bowler with a slower ball and cutter variations up his sleeve.
The other option for CSK to deploy in this period of play is Shardul Thakur, whom the franchise bought for INR 4 crore in the December auction. Thakur was part of CSK’s title-winning teams in 2018 and 2021.
The other injury news in the CSK camp is of Shivam Dube. The all-rounder missed the Ranji Trophy knockouts due to an injury but has joined the CSK squad after completing rehab at the NCA.
CSK, the defending champions, will start the IPL 2023 campaign on the opening night of the season by hosting Faf du Plessis’ RCB at the Chepauk.
