Smriti Mandhana is plying her trade for the Southern Brave Women team in the ongoing The Hundred Women’s Competition 2024. Currently, her team, led by Georgia Adams, is languishing at the bottom of the points table with three losses and one no result and is on the brink of elimination.
Their latest loss came against the Birmingham Phoenix Women side on Saturday at Edgbaston, Birmingham, where the hosts won by 16 runs.
During the match, Smriti Mandhana had an embarrassing moment when the third umpire gave her marching orders upon a review from Ellyse Perry after the left-handed opener didn’t walk despite edging the ball to the wicket-keeper.
While this didn’t spark a Spirit of Cricket debate, the jury remains out on incidents where batters have voluntarily walked off after edging even when the umpire hadn’t raised their finger.
Ellyse Perry, who is also the Birmingham Phoenix Women skipper, bowled a full length delivery outside the off-stump to Mandhana, who tried to guide it on the off-side. However, she had opened the face of her bat and the ball took a thick outside edge, which was caught well by wicket-keeper Amy Jones.
Perry and Jones went up in appeal, but the umpire didn’t give Mandhana out. Mandhana stood her ground and fretfully watched Ellyse Perry, who contemplated a DRS with wicket-keeper Amy Jones. Upon a brief discussion with the keeper, Perry signalled for the review.
No sooner had Perry signalled for the DRS than Smriti Mandhana started walking off, knowing well that she had nicked it and the on-field decision would be reversed by the third umpire. It took seconds for the third umpire to conclude that Mandhana had edged the ball and declared her out.
