Mandeep Singh Reflects On Hockey Bronze In Paris: Indian hockey star Mandeep Singh opened up about India’s bronze medal win in men’s hockey at the 2024 Paris Olympics, claiming that the team wanted to win a medal for the retiring PR Sreejesh.
Sreejesh served Indian hockey for well over a decade. Making his national senior team debut in 2006, the goalkeeper has been one of the most prolific players in his position. A modern-day legend in the sport, he was a part of the team during some of its worst years and its resurgence.
Right before the 2024 Olympics, the goalie announced that he would retire following the tournament. In what would be one of the most memorable wins in Indian sport, the men’s team won a bronze medal for the second Olympic games in a row.
Mandeep Singh Reflects On Hockey Bronze In Paris
Mandeep Singh, who was a crucial part of the Indian squad at the Olympics, recently discussed the third-place finish in a recent interview. The attacker suggested that the whole team wanted to win a second consecutive Olympic medal to give a perfect departing gift to PR Sreejesh, he said,
“We wanted to win for Sreejesh. He has done a lot for Indian hockey. He has been standing like a wall in front of the goal for all these years.”
India finished second in their group after defeating Australia at the Olympics for the first time in 52 years. The team then held Great Britain while being a man down for about three quarters to win the game in the shootout. In the semi-final, the team lost a close game to Germany.
Then came the bronze medal match. After conceding a goal off a penalty stroke in the second quarter, India scored two goals, one each in the second and third period, to win the game 2-1 and win their second bronze in a row after winning one at Topkyo 2020.
Speaking of the belief the team had to win the game against Spain despite being in a one-goal deficit, Mandeep said,
“We were determined to stick to our game plan irrespective of the score. We had faith in ourselves and believed that we could win from any situation. We finally prevailed when Harmanpreet scored from a penalty corner. Our self-belief and the hard work that we had put in for the last several months have finally paid off.”
Finally, the 29-year-old discussed how it is a great honour for the team to win yet another Olympic medal
“Nothing can compare with the feeling of winning an Olympic medal. This is the highest honour for a sportsman. The welcome we got after returning to India was amazing,” said Mandeep Singh.
India was the dominant power in world hockey, winning ten medals, including eight golds from 1928 to 1980 (the last one coming well after the Indian golden age at the heavily boycotted Moscow Olympics). The low point came in 2008 Beijing when India failed to qualify for the Olympics outright.
But the team has been rebuilding since. Qualifying for London 2012, a quarterfinal appearance in Rio 2016, and a medal in 2020 and the 2024 Paris Olympics, India hockey might be looking at yet another golden age.
