Manchester United Looking To Sign Timo Werner: Premier League side Manchester United are set to be on the lookout for a striker in the upcoming winter transfer window. And if reports are to be believed, one of the names on their list of targets is RB Leipzig and former Chelsea striker Timo Werner.
After setting Bundesliga on fire during his first stint with Leipzig, Werner received his big-money move to Chelsea in 2020. While playing for the London-based club, it seemed like he had left all his goal-scoring ability back in Germany. In his two seasons with The Blues, Timo scored a dismal 10 goals in 56 appearances in the Premier League across two seasons. His goal-scoring in other competitions wasn’t much better.

It wasn’t just his inability to score goals during his time in Chelsea, it was the horrendous misses he made and the absolute sitters he didn’t score that made him the butt of the joke on most occasions.
But now, it seems that the 27-year-old striker might be on his way back to England, as a struggling Manchester United are reportedly looking to Werner to their side as soon as the upcoming transfer window in January.
Popular football journalist and transfer newsbreaker Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Timo Werner is looking for an out from his current club RB Leipzig. After an alright season last year where he scored 16 goals across all competition, Werner has barely played for the side this season. He has only played 203 minutes across in 8 appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring 2 goals.

United are not having the best of seasons. Currently sixth in the Premier League, they are also on the verge of exiting the UEFA Champions League in the group stage. The team is losing matches to big teams and barely winning against those they should comfortably beat. The club seems to have lost their reputation as a ‘big-4’ club.
Apart from that, the team’s star striker Marcus Rashford seems to have lost all form too. After his sublime form in the first half of the 2022-23 season, it has been around a year since he has barely scored any goals. In the 12 Premier League matches he has played in 2023-24, he has only scored two goals, most recent of which was a penalty against Everton.

With Manchester United looking for a striking option, and Timo Werner looking to quit his current club, this possible transfer makes sense on a surface level. But one cannot forget the horrid time the German had the last time he played for an English club.
Besides, a striker is not even Manchester United’s biggest need at the moment. Injuries to Rafael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have exposed United’s backline massively. Despite Harry Maguire looking to revitalise his career, his leadership at the back is not enough to solve all of The Red Devils’ defensive woes.
