Luca Modric Could Break Real Madrid Trophy Record: Real Madrid and Croatia star Luca Modric will have a shot at making history and breaking a massive record next week when the team plays in the UEFA Super Cup.
The Super Cup is played every year between the winners of the UEFA Super League and UEFA Europa League. In the 2023/24 UCL final, a dominant Real Madrid beat a Borussia Dortmund side looking to punch above their weight 2-0 at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium.
The Europa League final was a much more exciting prospect, as Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen came into the final undefeated the whole season and on a 51-match winning streak. After winning the Bundesliga for the first time and the DFB Pokal, they looked to finish the season as Invincibles when they took on Italian side Atalanta.
But the final did not follow the script, as the Italians thrashed Leverkusen 3-0 in the final, winning their first European title.
Real Madrid, the UCL champions, and Atalanta, the UEL champions, will compete in the UEFA Super League Final. The one-match tournament will be played on Thursday, August 15, at 12:30 am (IST).
Luca Modric Could Break Real Madrid Trophy Record
Someone who will most likely feature for Real in that match is Luca Modric. The last member of the previous generation of Madridistas in the team, Modric has been an absolute maestro in the midfield for the Spanish giants for over a decade now.
In his time he has seen, linked up, and played with some of the best talents in the world. From the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo to Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos. Having formed arguably the best midfield duo in the world alongside Toni Kroos for years, Modric now remains the last of his generation still in the first team after Kroos’ retirement.
With his longevity at the club, combined with how successful the past decade has been for Real Madrid. In his 12-year stint at the Spanish club, the 38-year-old has won 26 trophies, which amounts to more than two per year on average. He holds the record for the most trophies for this historic club alongside Spanish midfielder Nacho.
The two currently hold the record together. But Nacho left Real Madrid as he left for Saudi club Al-Qadsiah after winning the UCL this summer, ending his 23-year-long career at the club, which started in the youth ranks.
This means that the next time Real Madrid wins a trophy, which could just be a week away, Luca Modric will become the player with the most trophies in the club’s history.
So far, his 26 trophies include six UCLs, four La Ligas, two Copa Del Reys, five Supercopa de Espana, four Super Cups, and five Club World Cups.
