LSG Were Going to Buy Marcus Stoinis: Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka revealed that the franchise was interested in bringing back Marcus Stoinis in the IPL 2024 Auction. LSG hadn’t capitalized on the two opportunities (IPL retention and auction) to retain the Australian allrounder.
When the LSG retention list was out, Stoinis was not a part of it. The franchise retained 5 players in the likes of:
- Nicholas Pooran: Retained for ₹21 crore
- Mayank Yadav: Retained for ₹11 crore
- Ravi Bishnoi: Retained for ₹11 crore
- Mohsin Khan: Retained for ₹4 crore
- Ayush Badoni: Retained for ₹4 crore
This gave LSG an RTM card going into the auction as they hadn’t retained a 6th player in the retention. But during the auction, Goenka and co. didn’t buy Stoinis, and the 35-year-old was signed by Punjab Kings for 11 crores.
LSG Were Going to Buy Marcus Stoinis, Then This Happened
In a recent talk with Aakash Chopra on his YouTube Channel, Goenka revealed that LSG was interested in signing Stoinis and had him available for or below 10.25 crores.
“Stoinis was definitely in our plans. We would have used the RTM for him had he been within 10 to 10.25 crores, but he went beyond. Yes, we would have definitely wanted Stoinis with us. We are disappointed that he is not, but this is the dynamic of any auction, now what to do?” he said.
Goenka implied the fact that Stoinis was one of the best performers for LSG in IPL 2024 but added that he had to take the decision for the best of the franchise.
“You cannot let your personal likes dictate what is best for the franchise. What is good for the franchise is good for the franchise. Stoinis is very good. He was our second-highest (third-highest) run-getter last season. He was not given that much bowling, but he was probably the most effective bowler after Mayank (Yadav),” he added.
