As many as 10 men’s ICC T20 World Cup tournaments have been played, with the inaugural edition hosted by South Africa in 2007.
The final of the maiden T20 World Cup set the tone for T20 cricket’s large, expanding wings as India and Pakistan played out a blockbuster in Johannesburg.
MS Dhoni led India to the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup trophy, which had a huge effect on world cricket as the IPL commenced less than a year later.
The second edition of the T20 World Cup was played in 2009, where Pakistan, who had lost the final to India two years ago, avenged themselves as the Younis Khan-captained Men in Green defeated Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s.
Surprisingly, the men’s ICC T20 World Cup rolled over only a year later, this time in the West Indies. Paul Collingwood captained England to their maiden men’s T20 world title, beating Australia in the final in Barbados.
The West Indies, under Daren Sammy, clinched their maiden T20 World Cup trophy in 2012 when they thumped hosts and favorites Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo.
Two years later, it was finally Sri Lanka’s moment. By that time, the Lankans had endured defeats in four ICC white-ball tournament finals between 2007 and 2011.
In 2014, in the tournament in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka overcame India in the final to win their maiden T20 World Cup trophy. Interestingly, while Sri Lanka began the tournament with Dinesh Chandimal as the captain, it was Lasith Malinga who led the side in the knockouts, including in the final. Chandimal dropped himself from the XI due to poor returns with the bat.
The 2016 T20 World Cup final was held in Kolkata, where Ian Bishop’s famous words, “Remember the name,” were born as Carlos Brathwaite smashed four sixes off four balls from Ben Stokes to take the West Indies to their second T20 World Cup trophy. With that, Sammy became the first captain to bag two T20 world titles.
There was no men’s ICC T20 World Cup in 2018, and the one scheduled in 2020 was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Australia finally got their hands on this coveted trophy when they beat New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 under Aaron Finch’s captaincy in Dubai.
A year later, in 2022, Australia were the host but failed to reach the semi-finals. Jos Buttler helped stamp the white-ball legacy of Eoin Morgan’s 2019 World Cup-winning team as England listed the T20 World Cup 2022 in Melbourne, with Pakistan finishing as the runners-up.
India had suffered an abject defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals, losing by 10 wickets to England. Rohit Sharma turned Indian fortunes around in 2024, as the Men in Blue ended the wait of 11 years for an ICC trophy by winning the final of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados at the expense of South Africa.
Two years later, India hosted the tournament and smashed three unprecedented records under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy. India became the first team to win the men’s ICC T20 World Cup thrice; the first team to lift this trophy on home soil; and the first team to win two consecutive men’s T20 World Cup titles.
