The Argentine, who is currently playing his trade for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, has the second most followers on Instagram and is right behind his career rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo became the first person to reach the 500 million follower milestone on Instagram a few years back. While he and Messi go back and forth in statistics throughout their career, this is one stat where CR7 is way ahead. Currently, at 622 million, Ronaldo is over 100 million followers ahead of Lionel.

Despite that, reaching 500 million followers is a massive achievement. This means that about 20% of 2.5 billion Instagram users worldwide follow Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo and Messi are first and second on the list of most followers. Actor/musician Salena Gomez is third with 429 million, and media personality Kylie Jenner is fourth with 400 million, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson rounds out the top five with 397 million Instagram followers.
His following becomes more absurd when we consider other sports and their followers. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has more Insta followers than all NFL players combined. He also has more followers than all 154 teams in the five major US sports leagues combined.
Breaking down his following, most of Messi’s Instagram followers are from Brazil, as the nation of Pele and Neymar contributes 12% to Messi’s following. Next is India with 8.1%, his home country of Argentina is third with 6.5%, and the USA is fourth with 6.2%. 72% of his Instagram followers are male and 85% of them are under 34 years old.
