Konstas Ready To Face Bumrah: Ahead of what is all but certain to be his Test debut, 19-year-old Sam Konstas is “excited” to face Jasprit Bumrah, the best fast bowler in the world who’s rocked up the ongoing BGT 2024-25.
Konstas received his maiden Test call-up as Australia dropped Nathan McSweeney from their squad for the rest of the BGT 2024-25, which is levelled at 1-1 after the first three Test matches.
McSweeney had scored 72 runs in three Tests but his axing was chiefly due to his horrendous struggles against Bumrah. McSweeney, who was not a specialist opener, was dismissed four times by Bumrah in six innings and averages less than four against India’s spearhead pacer. While Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have had a disastrous series so far, the young McSweeney faced the axe.
Konstas Ready To Face Bumrah
Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker of the BGT 2024-25 with 21 wickets at an average of only 10.9. Konstas is looking forward to facing Bumrah. He says he’s already watched plenty of videos of Bumrah and will now only rely on the analysts’ briefing regarding the speedster.
“I won’t watch too much [of Bumrah]. I have already seen him a lot. But I am excited to challenge myself and face him. Usually, our analysts do a little feedback on each bowler. I might read that, maybe,” Konstas said.
I’m super confident: Sam Konstas
Konstas, who was in the running as well for the opener’s slot before McSweeney got it, got selected on the back of some good form. He had hit twin centuries at the start of the Sheffield Shield season.
He scored a match-winning 73* against India A for Australia A at the MCG before the start of the series. Recently, he hammered 107 off 97 balls against Indians in a pink-ball warm-up match against an Indian bowling attack that lacked Bumrah. The right-hander then scored 88 in a first-class match against Western Australia before blasting 56 (27) on his BBL debut for Sydney Thunder.
“I’m super confident. Just backing my skills, I have done all the hard work. Just another game, I guess, and trying to keep it simple. As a kid you have always dreamt of the moment, and it is very rare, getting your baggy green. So it’s a huge honour if I do get in,” Konstas added.
