The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has accommodated player requests for flexible departure dates, resulting in planned departures until May 30. Logistics arrangements are being made to accommodate the varying departures.
Jaydev Unadkat, who has been undergoing shoulder injury rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, is expected to recover in time for the WTC final and may join the team after May 27. The first group will include Mukesh Kumar from the three standby players, while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Suryakumar Yadav will depart for England following their IPL commitments with the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, respectively.
In a change of plans, Virat Kohli includes in first batch of Indian Team, the team may not have a warm-up match before the WTC final. Instead, a game among the touring members will be organized after everyone arrives in London. The final itself will be held at the historic Oval ground in London from June 7 to June 12.
It is noteworthy that while the Indian players have had extensive game time during the IPL, only three Australian players involved in the WTC final have participated in the IPL. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has acknowledged the potential advantage of match practice for the Indian players, contrasting it with the mental preparation of the Australian players who haven’t been engaged in much cricket recently. The Indian team, having finished as runners-up in the previous edition, will be determined to clinch their first ICC trophy in a decade.
The absence of warm-up matches has been attributed to the ongoing English County Championship and the non-obligatory nature of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to arrange practice matches for the visiting team. Organizing a match against a select county XI was deemed unsuitable as it would primarily feature second-team or development squad players, which wouldn’t provide the desired level of quality practice.
