KL Rahul Nears IPL Record On Return To Lucknow: Indian Cricket Team and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper/batter KL Rahul has reached Lucknow to play there for the first time since leaving the Lucknow Super Giants. Not only will the next match mean a lot emotionally for KL and his fans, but the star batter will also be eyeing an IPL record.
When LSG first came into existence ahead of IPL 2022, KL Rahul was one of the three players the team drafted. In essence, he was the first Super Giant. He was named the captain of the team and led the side to back-to-back playoffs. In 2024, when he was injured and missed much of the season, the team finished seventh.
The 33-year-old is still the highest run scorer of the franchise, having scored 1410 runs in 38 matches across three seasons. His average while playing for the Lucknow-based side was 41.47, and he played with a strike rate of 130.67.

Despite that, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Super Giants released their captain. Last year, reports emerged of tensions between skipper Rahul and team owner Sanjiv Goenka. The team even insinuated that they were looking for a new captain who plays with “intent”. That is why, in the auction, Rishabh Pant was bought for a record price of Rs 27 crore and was then named captain.
However, this season, KL has been in excellent form, having scored 266 runs in six matches at an average of 53.20 and a strike rate of 158.33.
And with this red-hot form, the veteran wicketkeeper has arrived in Lucknow, as the Delhi Capitals will play the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium tonight, April 22. He missed the reverse fixture of this match, which was also the first game of these two sides this season. That match in Visakhapatnam was narrowly won by DC, with KL missing the game due to the birth of his daughter.
The Capitals posted a video of Rahul arriving at the Ekana for practice ahead of the match. Watch –

But that is not the only significant part of this match for KL Rahul, as he is also very close to breaking an IPL record. So far, in 129 innings in this competition, he has scored 4949 runs, only 51 away from an even 5000.
Currently, the record of being the fastest to 5000 runs in the IPL is held by David Warner, who reached the milestone in 135 innings. This means that Rahul, who will likely play his 130th inning in the IPL later today, has a chance to break Warner’s record a whole five innings early.
As for the Delhi Capitals, they are currently second in the league table with five wins, ten points, and a solid net run rate in seven games. Meanwhile, LSG is fifth in the points table with five wins, ten points, and a positive net run rate in seven matches.
