KKR vs RCB Under Rain Threat: The IPL 2025 is set to kick off on Saturday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata with the KKR vs RCB fixture.
The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, though sans their title-winning captain of last season, Shreyas Iyer, will host the Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22. However, the opening fixture of the IPL 2025 season has come under the threat of rain.
The weather forecast released from the Indian Met Department (IMD) has issued an “orange alert” for the region in which Eden Gardens is situated.
Kolkata has seen rainfalls in recent days. There were short spells of showers on Wednesday and Thursday in Kolkata, and one KKR inter-squad practice match was washed out after the first innings.
KKR vs RCB Under Rain Threat? Rain Forecast for Kolkata for Saturday
The Met Department has predicted “light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely” until Saturday in Kolkata, adding that Friday and Saturday are set to receive the maximum amount of rain.
This could affect the IPL 2025 season opener between KKR and RCB. The match has a scheduled start time of 7:30 PM IST.
What are the rules for rain-affected matches in IPL?
For league matches in the IPL, there is a one-hour time extension allowed, after which overs start getting deducted. A five-over-per-side match is the minimum requirement in the league stage to constitute a result, and it must get completed by midnight.
In case the match is washed out – that is a five-over-per-side game is not able to produce a result – then both teams will share a point each.
Further, there is an opening ceremony planned before the toss at the Eden Gardens. It is not known yet how it will be affected if rain delays the toss and the match.
The clouds and rain would impact the conditions as well. The Eden Gardens was a heavy-scoring ground last season, but the conditions in this game will come as some sort of an aid to the bowlers.
Meanwhile, both KKR and RCB will be played under new captains, Ajinkya Rahane and Rajat Patidar, respectively. Phil Salt, who was a key member of KKR’s title-winning team last season, was bought by RCB in the mega auction. KKR have replaced Salt with Quinton de Kock.
Last season, KKR won the title, while RCB were knocked out in the Eliminator match by RR after making a miraculous entry in the playoffs.
