The Kings won the toss of this IPL 2025 match and decided to bat first on a cloudy and windy evening in the City of Joy. They got off to a flying start on their innings. The opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya scored 56 runs in the powerplay and did not lose a wicket.
The two men then got to their half-centuries, and it was only at the end of the 12th over, when the team had already scored 120 runs, that the first wicket fell when Arya was dismissed by Andre Russell. The young opener made 69 off 35 at a strike rate of 197.14.
Captain Shreyas Iyer played a small yet quick knock, scoring 25 off 16, as he did not play too many balls, despite being on the pitch for eight overs. The star of the show, however, was Prabhsimran Singh, who scored 83 runs in 49 deliveries at a solid strike rate of 169.39.
When Prabhsimran got out in the 15th over at the hands of Vaibhav Arora, the PBKS score was 160/2. A score of 220+ was well within reach. However, in the remaining 33 deliveries, only 41 runs were scored as the KKR bowlers pulled the run rate back in the final five with Arora, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, and Varun Chakravarthy bowling efficiently at the end.

Glenn Maxwell, who played today in place of Marcus Stoinis, scored seven runs in eight deliveries before getting bowled by Chakravarthy. Marco Jansen just scored 3 off 7, and Josh Inslis scored 11 off 8 and finished the innings alongside Iyer.
It promised to be a competitive match in the mid-innings break as the winds picked up a nudge, and the cloud coverage was about 100% over the stadium. As the Knight Riders’ innings kicked off, it started drizzling a little, which turned into a downpour towards the end of the first over, which was bowled by Marco Jansen, who conceded seven runs.
The ground staff ran onto the stadium with rain covers, which would not come off for the rest of the evening, as the match was first delayed due to rain and was then called off. Ajinkya Rahane’s KKR only needed to play five more overs before any result for this match could be declared.
With the first washout of IPL 2025, both teams get a point. Home side Kolkata Knight Riders now have three wins and seven points with a positive net run rate in nine games, putting them seventh on the points table. As for the Punjab Kings, they climb to fourth on the table with five wins, 11 points, and a positive net run rate in nine matches.
