Kevin Owens Hits Randy Orton With A Piledriver: In one of the most shocking moments on WWE TV in some time, Kevin Owens hit Randy Orton with a sit-out piledriver on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown while the two were brawling in the rind.
The Orton vs. Owens feud is one of the most exciting things in WWE at the moment. As the storyline goes, the two were great friends on TV and even formed a tag team some time back. But when their mutual friend and WWE Champion Cody Rhodes decided to team up with Roman Reigns (Kevin’s long-time rival), Kevin snapped and attacked Rhodes.
Randy accidentally struck Owens between Cody and Kevin’s brawl a few weeks back while trying to stop his friend from fighting. On that night, The Viper’s feud with the Prizefighter began.
It seemed that the two’s feud might culminate at last week’s Crown Jewel PLE. But on the show in Saudi Arabia, the two didn’t even have a match and instead brawled all over the arena. The officials tried to stop them from fighting but were dispatched off. Randy Oron even hit RAW General Manager Adam Pierce with an RKO. Their fight ended when Kevin Owens dived from a balcony outside the ring of the 14-time world champion lying on a table.

On SmackDown this week, the Apex Predator stormed out to the ring and called out Owens. The former Universal Champion promptly walked out, and another brawl started, with several officials running out to stop it.
After exchanging a few punches and kicks, Kevin Owens kicked Orton in the groin, then proceeded to pick him up and hit him with a sit-out piledriver.
For those who are unaware, piledrivers of any kind have been banned in the WWE for over two decades now. In all that time, only The Undertaker and Kane were allowed to use the move. Some superstar sporadically pulls out the move and shocks the entire fandom. For example, CM Punk hit John Cena with one during their famous RAW match in 2013, and the internet went ballistic.
Piledrivers were said to be banned after Owen Hart hit “Stone Cold” Steve Austin with a sit-out variant at SummerSlam 1997. From that move, Austin broke his neck, had to take a long hiatus away from wrestling, alter his wrestling style, and had his career shortened by years.
The piledriver Kevin hit Orton with was a sit-out one as well, making the spot even more surprising. What gives this a little more oomph is how Randy Orton has struggled with neck injuries in recent years. In 2022, the Legend Killer had to step away from in-ring competition for spinal fusion. Not only was he away from in-ring competition for 18 months, but during his recovery, there were occasions when it was believed that he would never wrestle again.
WWE sold the piledriver on Randy Orton with all the seriousness in the world. The commentators said that they don’t want to see the replays of the move. Randy himself sold the move by not moving an inch. He was taken backstage on a stretcher and sent to the hospital in an ambulance. The company has released an update, claiming that Orton has suffered from an “undisclosed cervical injury.”
While the injury was in all likelihood just part of the storyline, the fans could not help but feel a little uneasy seeing Randy Orton take that move and the way he sold it, knowing his history with spinal injuries.
