South Africa got off to a decent start as captain Temba Bavuma came out to bat with Matthew Breetzke, who was making his ODI debut.
Bavuma got out in the eighth over, following which Breetzke built a decent partnership with Jason Smith. In the 27th over, the Proteas had lost their third wicket and were 132/3. From this point, the debutant had a solid partnership with Wiaan Mulder.
In this 100-run-plus partnership, Matthew Breetzke first reached his century on debut, and then went above that in milestones and went on to score 150 runs in 148 deliveries before getting out.
This is the highest score by a debutant in ODI cricket, breaking a 47-year-old record by Desmond Haynes, who scored 148 runs on his debut against Australia in 1978. Due to this massive inning and a solid half-century by Mulder, South Africa scored 304/6 in 50 overs.

In response, New Zealand got off to a fine start as Will Young and Devon Conway had a 50-run opening partnership. But it was after Young’s dismissal that this inning truly took off. Conway batted with Kane Williamson to bat the game away from South Africa.
The two men built together a staggering 187-run partnership in 25 overs. By the time Conway had gotten out for 97, the team score was 237/2 in the 36th over. With a win in sight, Williamson took charge of staying on one end and ensuring the win.
While a couple more wickets fell from the other end, Kane Williamson kept on batting, eventually scoring a hundred. When New Zealand finally crossed the finish line with six wickets and eight balls to spare, Kane’s individual score was 133 in 113 balls.
With this win, the BlackCaps have qualified for the final of this tri-series. Now, the second spot in the final will go to the winner of match three between South Africa and Pakistan.
Winning this competition is crucial, especially because the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in the same stadiums just a week or so later.
