Jos Buttler Hints At Captaincy Sack: England captain Jos Buttler has hinted at his future being bleak as England’s white-ball skipper following England’s group-stage exit in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. England were knocked out of the tournament on Wednesday after losing by eight runs to Afghanistan, which followed their loss against Australia earlier in the competition.
This is the third consecutive underwhelming competition for England in ICC events. After Buttler led the Three Lions to the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 title in Australia, England failed to reach the semi-finals in the ICC World Cup 2023, were knocked out of the semi-finals in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by India, and now they have been eliminated in the group stage in the Champions Trophy 2025. This is also the second consecutive loss for England against Afghanistan in ICC ODI events.

Buttler said he enjoys leading the team but wondered whether he is part of the problem, hinting that he will “consider all possibilities” when deciding his future as the white-ball captain.
Buttler told Sky Sports, “It’s tough to say, stood here right now, and I don’t want to make any sort of emotional statements. But I think it’s fair to say that you’ve got to consider all possibilities.
“I’ve enjoyed it [the captaincy]. I’ve seen lots of people say it doesn’t sit well with me, but I do enjoy it. I enjoy the challenge. Obviously, I don’t enjoy losing games of cricket and the results. And, of course, when they’re not going well, you do look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘Am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?’ I think that’s what I’ve got to work out.”
But Buttler’s future fate may not lie with him anymore, he understands.
“You [the press] are probably not the first people I’d discuss that with. I’ll take a little bit of time to work out, personally, what I think is right, and obviously the guys at the top are in charge, and they’ll have their own views as well,” he added.
Before the Champions Trophy, England lost seven out of eight white-ball games against India under Buttler.
