Joe Root Does A Reverse Ramp to Complete Century: England star batsman Joe Root reached his 36th Test century in the most Bazball way possible: by reverse-ramping William O’Rourke over the wicketkeeper’s head for a boundary!
To play that shot while being on 98* in a Test match is quite insane from England’s greatest Test batsman, who now equaled Rahul Dravid’s record as the fifth-highest Test centurion. Ahead of Root and Dravid is Kumar Sangakkara with 38 Test tons. Sachin Tendulkar, the leading Test centurion with 51 centuries, is also in Root’s sight for now.
The reverse ramp has become a trademark shot of Joe Root’s in the Bazball era since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over the reins in 2022.
Batting on 98* off 126 balls in England’s second innings in the Wellington Test, Root got into a horizontal stance, being almost parallel to the stumps, and reverse-scooped a length ball from O’Rourke over the cordon behind him for a four to seal his century.
Root fell down after playing the shot. Once he got up quickly, he celebrated his ton with a huge smile and got a standing ovation from the crowd at the Basin Reserve.

In England’s second innings, Root scored 106 off 130 balls after Ben Duckett (92) and Jacob Bethell (96) had missed their respective centuries by a whisker. Harry Brook cracked 55 while Ben Stokes hammered 49*. England set New Zealand a huge target of 583 runs, chasing which the hosts got bowled out for 259 and lost by 323 runs.
Harry Brook was named the Player of the Match for his majestic century in the first innings, where he scored 123 runs off 115 balls.
With the ball for England, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse took four wickets each in New Zealand’s first innings. And in the second outing, five bowlers shared the 10 Kiwi wickets, with Ben Stokes taking 3/5 in only 2.2 overs.
