On Day 1 of the ongoing second Test of the series, the West Indies and South Africa played a thrilling day of Test cricket at the Providence Stadium, Guyana. After the drawn first Test, this second Test became even more crucial for the Proteas in particular with regard to the World Test Championship points table, and the series is also on the line.
The pitch in Guyana was a spicy one, as 17 wickets fell in the day, with 257 runs being scored in 82.2 overs. The pacers of both teams ran riot, taking 15 out of 17 wickets to fall.
South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. They were bowled out for only 160 runs as speedster Shamar Joseph took a five-wicket haul. Supporting him was Jayden Seales, who took a three-wicket haul.
For the visitors, Dane Piedt, the number 10 batter, was the highest scorer with 38 runs, and number 11 Nandre Burger scored 23. Three other batters—Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, and Kyle Verreynne—got into the 20s but couldn’t reach 30. South Africa were 97/9 at one stage, but the last pair trudged them to 160.
Their total proved not to be small, as West Indies batters also struggled against the Protea pacer attack. By the end of Day 1, the West Indies are 97/7, with former skipper and veteran all-rounder Jason Holder batting on 33. Wiaan Mulder rocked the hosts with a four-wicket haul, while Burger took two scalps and one wicket went to Keshav Maharaj.
Jayden Seales stuns Tony de Zorzi with a terrific inswinger
Fast bowler Jayden Seales drew the first blood of the match when he knocked over opener Tony de Zorzi’s off-stump with a sensational in-swinging delivery. From around the wicket angle, Seales sent down a length delivery that swung into the left-handed de Zorzi.
The left-hander leaned forward into a defensive stroke but couldn’t cover the line of the in-swinging ball. The ball went through the gap between de Zorzi’s bat and pad and crashed into the off-stump, knocking it out of the ground and sending it cartwheeling. A dream delivery and a dream result for a fast bowler.
