Jay Shah On BCCI Hunting For New India Head Coach: BCCI secretary Jay Shah has refuted reports of former Australian cricketers like Ricky Ponting being offered the role of team India head coach.
Rahul Dravid is the current India head coach. His contract is set to expire following the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. With aspirants for the job having till May 27 to apply for the position, several former cricketers are in the race.
Names are being thrown around left and right to be the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The two Indian names that have emerged recently have been Gautam Gambhir, who was reportedly approached by the BCCI for the position, and Harbhajan Singh, who has applied for the job.
Some international names are also in the mix, from Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene to former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming.
It was recently reported that former Australian players Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer were approached by the BCCI to be the India head coach. Ponting has been the head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL for a few seasons; meanwhile, Langer was appointed as the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants.
Reports suggest that not only were these two offered the post by the BCCI, but they have both since turned it down due to personal reasons.
Jay Shah On BCCI Hunting For New India Head Coach
But that is not the case, according to Jay Shah, who has rubbished the claims of any Australian being approached by him or the BCCI for the head coach position.
“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect,” Jay Shah told The Indian Express.
Shah then went on to dwell on how it is a thorough process to pick India’s next head coach. He said,
“Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It’s crucial that our coach has in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level.”
India will go into the 2024 T20 World Cup as one of the favorites. This will be the fourth ICC tournament for India under Rahul Dravid. Having lost in the final the last two times, Dravid and India will look to go one step further this time around.
