India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has climbed back to the top of the ICC Mens Test Bowlers rankings and has attained his career-best ratings following his thunderous show in the first Test of the BGT 2024-25 against Australia in Perth.
While leading the side in Rohit Sharma’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah took 8 wickets in the match for only 72 runs, which included a five-for in the first innings that helped India bowl Australia out for only 104 runs, taking a 46-run lead.
Bumrah’s heroics on either side of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli were key to India’s massive victory by 295 runs, helping them take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.
Jasprit Bumrah Leapfrogged Rabada and Hazlewood
Bumrah, who had held the numero uno spot in the Test bowling rankings in February and October, had earlier slipped down to the No. 3 position. After his sensational show in Perth, the right-handed speedster pushed aside South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who had replaced Bumrah, and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood to reclaim the top position.
Bumrah’s teammate Mohammed Siraj also made a steady climb in his rankings. Following his five wickets in the Perth Test, Siraj moved up three spots to the 25th position.
In the batting department, Jaiswal attained his career-best position of second in the ICC Men’s Batsmen rankings, going past New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and England’s Harry Brook. Jaiswal’s 161 was crucial in India piling up a huge second-innings lead. Only England’s Joe Root is ahead of Jaiswal in the batsmen ranking.
Virat Kohli finally got to his 81st international century and got out of a poor form in Test cricket. His ton saw him rise 9 places to the 13th spot. This was Kohli’s 30th Test hundred.
Australia’s Travis Head, too, made gains in the batting department. On the back of his 89 in the second innings, Head got into the top 10. He shifted three places up to sit in the 10th position.
In the Test all-rounders rankings, Ravindra Jadeja continues to hold the top spot, and behind him is his teammate R Ashwin.
