Jasprit Bumrah Injury Update: India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah left the field soon after the start of the second session on day 2 of the ongoing 5th Test against Australia in Sydney.
This left the Indian team a man down, and it’s their most important bowler who is likely to bag the Man of the Series award. Despite Bumrah’s absence, the other Indian bowlers did well to bowl Australia out for 181 runs, taking a small four-run lead.
Coming to Bumrah, the Indian skipper bowled 8 overs today. He bowled 7 overs in the first session during which he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne.
He left the field for a few overs in the first session as well but returned to bowl. He then bowled one over in the second session after lunch but left the field immediately. Virat Kohli took over the captaincy duties for the rest of Australia’s innings.
Later in the same session, Bumrah was seen leaving the SCG with the team doctor and a security officer. He was taken to have scans.
Jasprit Bumrah Injury Update: Jasprit Bumrah has back spasms, can bat but is uncertain of bowling
India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna attended the press conference after the day’s play on Saturday. He revealed that Bumrah had back spasms and hence left the venue to get scans. Krishna didn’t say anything about Bumrah’s participation for the rest of the match.
“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans. The medical team is monitoring him, so we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us,” Prasidh said.
While Prasidh remained coy over Bumrah’s fitness for the rest of the Test, Times Of India reported that Bumrah will be “okay” to bat in India’s second innings, but his bowling fitness will be adjudged on the morning of day 3, when Australia are expected to bowl India out and begin their chase. TOI reported Bumrah’s spasms are not serious.
“Bumrah was taken for a precautionary scan after a back spasm, but nothing serious at the moment. He should be okay to bat, but a final call on his bowling will be taken on the basis of how he feels in the morning. So let’s see, and the medical team is closely monitoring him,” a source told TOI.
After taking a four-run first-innings lead, India got off to a cracking start with Yashasvi Jaiswal crashing four boundaries in the first over off Mitchell Star. However, the hosts rocked back in the innings through Scott Boland, who took 4/42 in 13 overs, carrying on from his 4/31 in the first innings.
Boland dismissed Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. India’s lead has come close to 150 only because of Rishabh Pant’s pyrotechnics. Pant smashed 61 runs off 33 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes.
At stumps on day 2 in Sydney, India are 141/6 with a lead of 145.
