Jasprit Bumrah and Smriti Mandhana were named ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month respectively for the month of June 2024. This is the first occasion that players from the same country won both awards in the same cycle.
June was a stellar month for India in cricket across the board. The Men’s team won the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was the team’s first ICC tournament win in 11 years. After being undefeated in the whole tournament, the Men in Blue took on South Africa in the final.

After having scored some decent runs in the first inning on the back of Virat Kohli’s first half-century in the tournament, the Indian National Cricket Team got off to a decent defence of their score before the likes of Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen took the game away. With South Africa requiring 30 runs in as many deliveries, India’s pace trio scripted a comeback. Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, and especially Jasprit Bumrah tied down the South African batters and won the team the game by seven runs.
It was also an awesome month for the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team. They first took on South Africa in a three-game ODI series, winning all three of those games, the first one of them being a 143-run win.
After an ODI whitewash, India took on and thrashed the South African women in the one-off Test match by 10 wickets.
In the men’s team’s campaign in the T20 World Cup, Bumrah was an absolute standout. Despite not being the team’s highest wicket-taker (which was Arshdeep Singh with 17), Bumrah took 15 wickets in eight games with a cheap economy of 4.17 and a disgustingly low average of 8.26.

Bumrah was also the game-changer in the final, as it was his third over, which was the 16th over of the inning, which started to turn the tide in favour of India.
As for the women’s team’s dominance over their South African counterparts, Smriti Mandhana had a series to remember. In the ODI series, she became the first Indian woman to score consecutive 100s in two games. In the third match, she scored a brilliant 90 while chasing and took her team to victory and was named the Player of the Series.
In the one-off Test, Mandhana smashed 149-off-161 in the first inning for India, not getting to bat in the second inning, which was a 34-run chase.
In the case of Bumrah, he pipped Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rohit Sharma for the Player of the Month awards. Gurbaz was the highest scorer in the T20 World Cup with 281 runs in eight games, an average of 35.12, and a strike rate of 124.33. On the other hand, Rohit was the second-highest run-scorer in the competition with 257 runs in eight games, but with a far higher strike rate og 156.70.
As for Smriti, she pipped England’s Maia Bouchier and Sri Lanka’s Vishmi Gunaratne for the honor.
