IPL Introduces New Rules and Technology: We are just a day away from the start of the 2024 season of the Indian Premier LeagueWith excitement levels of cricket fans in India through the roof, BCCI has announced three new changes that will be introduced to the league aimed to make matches more enjoyable.
IPL has been on the front lines of innovations in cricket. From popularising the spider-cam to being the first major league to use the Impact Player rule.
IPL Introduces New Rules and Technology
To increase the contest between bat and ball, IPL will be introducing the rule of two bouncers being allowed per over.
While two bouncers per over being allowed is a common thing in cricket, this is reserved for ODI and Test formats. In T20s, to give an advantage to the batter, only one bouncer has been allowed per over across international and franchise cricket.

In the 2024 season, IPL will see bowlers being allowed to bowl two bouncers per over, which will make world-class pacers like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc even scarier.
As for the other change, it is not a rule but a piece of technology. The Smart Replay system will see eight high-speed hawk eye cameras stationed around the ground. These cameras will provide real-time image aid to the TV umpire for DRS decisions. This will drastically decrease the time taken in dishing out decisions.
Cricket has had a problem with a lot of time being taken wherever decisions go up to the TV umpire. The Smart Replay system will revolutionize umpiring decisions with cutting-edge technology.
In what is another departure from international cricket, IPL will not be adopting the stop-clock rule. ICC has recently been experimenting with and implementing a 60-second stop-clock after the end of an over, before the end of which the next over has to start.
This rule has been put into place to decrease the “dead time” during matches and can save up to 20 minutes per match. But BCCI has decided that IPL will not see this rule be implemented.
IPL 2024 is set to kick off on March 22, when defending champions Chennai Super Kings will start their title defense against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
