IPL 2024 will allow two bouncers an over. This significant change by the IPL authorities is part of the initiative to bring about a fair balance between the batter and the bowler. The rule will come into play in IPL 2024 and will continue to stand.
The rule that might make the game more thrilling, considering the unpredictable element it brings in favor of the bowler over the batter, has been tested in one of India’s domestic T20 tournaments, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
IPL 2024 Will Allow Two Bouncers an Over: Jaydev Saurashtra Welcomes the New Rule
The rule is already being welcomed by Saurashtra’s veteran, Jaydev Unadkat.
Jaydev believes that it brings unpredictability into the game, and the batter, who already had a bouncer in the over, would anticipate more at any time, unlike the predictable circumstances that the game already had when it was allowed a bouncer over.
“I do feel two bouncers and an over are very useful, and I feel it’s one of those things that gives the bowler an added advantage over batsmen,” Unadkat told ESPNcricinfo. “Because, for example, if I bowl a slower bouncer… the batsman in the previous case is sure that there’s no more bouncer coming.

He also opined that the rule will raise the quality of the game as the batters who are not that comfortable with the bouncer will have to make themselves better at it
“In this case, even if you bowl one slower bouncer in the first half of the over, you can still use one more [in the over]. Someone who is weak against bouncers will have to be better at it, and then it will give the bowler one more weapon in their armory. So, I feel it’s a very small change with a huge impact and as a bowler, I feel it’s very important to have that rule.”
According to Jaydev, the rule also brings an additional tule in deathovers. As pacers tend to lean on yorkers in last overs, and now that they can throw bouncers in two of the six balls in an over, they could leave the batter guessing every time the bowler comes at them.
“Also in the death overs, you have one more option,” he said. “So, it was becoming more of yorker-oriented [bowling] in death overs for fast bowlers. Not it can be yorker, slower ball, and bouncers because of two bouncers an over. Even if you don’t bowl the second bouncer, the batsman still has that expectation that the bowler might bowl the second bouncer.” Said Jaydev.
