The Indian Women’s Hockey Team is scheduled to tour Australia for a five-match series starting on May 18th and ending on May 27th. The first three games of the series will be played against Australia, followed by two matches against Australia A. All the matches will take place at MATE Stadium in Adelaide.
Indian Women’s Hockey Team 2023 Ready for Asian Games With Tour of Australia
On May 18th, India will play their first match of the tour, followed by two consecutive games on May 20th and 21st. Later, on May 25th and 27th, the visitors will face off against Australia A. The Australian women’s hockey team is currently ranked third in the world, while the Indian team holds the eighth position.
The tour will serve as a warm-up event for the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will take place in September-October this year. Talking about the same, Janneke Schopman, the Chief Coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team 2023, said, – “Playing Australia in Australia will help us assess where we are compared to the top of women’s hockey. More importantly, the series will be crucial for our preparations for the Asian Games in China as it will give us ideal exposure while helping us reckon the areas where we need to make improvements and changes. So, it’s a very important tour for us strategically.”
Indian Women’s Hockey Team 2023 will arrive in Australia with high spirits, having won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in December 2022 by defeating the host nation, Spain, in the final. Additionally, in January 2023, India toured South Africa and won the first three matches with scores of 5-1, 7-0, and 4-0, respectively, while the fourth game ended in a 2-2 draw. However, during the same tour, the Indian team lost 1-3 to the Netherlands in their last three games.
The Indian Women’s Hockey Team 2023 made history by defeating the three-time Olympic gold medallists Australia 1-0 in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. This was a remarkable achievement for India, who were participating in only their third Olympics and had qualified for the Quarter-Finals for the first time. Meanwhile, Australia, who had won three gold medals in the past, were the opponents in this historic match.
In the Semi-Final match of the Commonwealth Games 2022 held in Birmingham, India put up a tough fight against Australia. The match ended in a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time. However, Australia managed to win the penalty shoot-out 3-0, which enabled them to secure a place in the final.
