The Indian cricket team ended their wait of 11 years for an ICC trophy when the Rohit Sharma-led side lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29. This was India’s second T20 World Cup title, after winning the inaugural edition in 2007 under MS Dhoni in South Africa.
Soon after, seniors Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from T20Is, which reflected that, as they are in their mid-30s, they want to prioritize the upcoming important fixtures in Test and ODI formats.
India have had a good 2024 so far. They started the year by winning the Cape Town Test and thus levelled the series 1-1 after losing the first Test. India then whitewashed Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series.
India hosted Ben Stokes’ England for a five-Test series and won it 4-1, bouncing back superbly after losing the first Test.
Then the IPL 2024 season took center-stage in March-April-May. Soon after the cash-rich league, the Indian players flew to the USA for the T20 World Cup. India won all their games in the group round in the USA and in the Super 8 in the West Indies.

In the semi-final, they thrashed England, and in the final, India recorded a victory by only 7 runs over South Africa
After the T20 World Cup, India saw a change in the coaching staff as Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid. Also, Suryakumar Yadav is appointed the new T20I captain. India won the T20I series in Sri Lanka 3-0 but lost the ODI series 2-0.
So, plenty of shifts have happened in Indian cricket over the past couple of months.
There are more exciting series coming up for Team India, which includes a home season where they host Bangladesh and New Zealand and tour South Africa for a T20I series.
Then, the team will fly to Australia for a high-voltage five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Upon returning, India will host England for white-ball matches before leaving for the Champions Trophy 2025.
