The ranking round of women’s recurve archery at the 2024 Paris Olympics happened today, which was also the first event with Indian participation at the games. Not only did the women make it to the quarterfinals of the team event, but their raking for the individual event has been revealed as well.
While yes, the opening ceremony for the Olympics is still a day away, some of the events have already started. The likes of handball and football have been played in the past couple of days.
As for India’s participation in the events, it started today with women’s archery. 64 archers participated in the ranking round, which is the opening round in the archery competition at the games. India’s Ankita Bhakat, Deepika Kumari, and Bhajan Kaur competed in the event.
64 archers shot 12 rounds of six shots each, meaning everyone took 72 shots. As the highest score one can score in a shot in archery is 10, their final score would be out of 720.

After everyone had shot 72 times, their final score would determine their ranking for the round of 64. Not only that, but the combined score of all archers from a country would be added up to confirm their seed for the women’s team event in which 12 nations are participating.
Ankita Bhakat was India’s highest scorer. With 666 points, she finished 11th. Bhajan Kaur shot a score of 659 and finished 22nd. Deepika Kumari, who is an 11-time gold medal winner at the world championships, finished with 658 points and in 23rd position.
This event has locked in the round of 64 matches for the women’s individual event. Ankita will face the 54th-ranked Wioleta Myszor from Poland, while Bhajan will face Indonesia’s Syyifa Nurafifah Kamal, who is ranked 43rd. Meanwhile, Kumari will face the 42nd-ranked Reena Pernat from Estonia.
India Women Qualifies For Quarterfinal In Archery
The total score of the three Indian archers also decided the country’s place in the women’s team event. With 12 nations participating, the top four would get a bye in the first round and head straight to the quarterfinals. While teams ranked 5th to 12th will compete in the first round.
With a total of 1983, India finished fourth, behind South Korea, China, and Mexico. This will mean that India will face the winner of the first-round match between France and the Netherlands.
But the major news coming out of the women’s archery event is that South Korean Lim Sihyeon broke the world record in the ranking round, scoring a mind-boggling 694. The South Korean team also broke the Olympic record, notching up a total of 2046 out of 2100, 50 points better than the second-placed China.
The women’s team event knockout matches will take place on July 28th, and the knockouts for the individual event will take place from June 30th to August 3rd.
The men’s and mixed-ranking rounds will take place in the evening and will feature. The men’s team will feature Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara, and Pravin Jadhav. While the mixed team consists of Bommadevara, Ankita Khakat, and Bhajan Kaur.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics will take place on July 26th on the banks of the river Seine.
