While two cycles of the WTC have been completed, the Champions Trophy is being brought back in 2025, with the tournament taking place at the home of the defending champions, Pakistan.
Pakistan defeated India in the final of the 2017 edition of the tournament by a whopping 180 runs.
The top eight teams in the 2023 ODI World Cup qualified for the Champions Trophy. Those eight teams are India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan (hosts), Afghanistan, England, and Bangladesh.
The tournament will be played between February 19 and March 9, 2025, with the matches being played in Lahore, Karachi’s National Stadium, and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.
Seven matches of the tournament, which include all of India’s matches and the final, will be played in Lahore. Five matches will be played in Karachi, while three will be played in Rawalpindi.
While these locations are yet to be approved by the local governments, that is not the biggest hurdle for the tournament organizers.
For the 2023 Asia Cup, which was to be played in Pakistan, the BCCI did not agree on playing India in our neighbor to the west. The Men in Blue instead played all their matches, including the final, in Sri Lanka.
However, it is being reported that the ICC has informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to go ahead with their preparations for the competition.
The most recent game between India and Pakistan took place last night in the 2023 T20 World Cup in New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
The match was won by India, despite putting up a meagre total of 119 in the first inning. A bowling masterclass by Jasprit Bumrah and Co. meant India has now all but qualified for the Super 8 with a six-run win. On the other hand, Pakistan looks to be almost out of the competition at such an early stage.
