India squads for ODI and T20Is vs South Africa: Even though there are only 6 more T20Is left for India to play across two series—3 in South Africa and 3 against Afghanistan at home—before the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have opted out of the T20I series, along with the ODIs, in South Africa this month.
The BCCI announced the squads for all three formats for India’s tour of South Africa. India will tour South Africa for 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 Test matches from December 10 to January 7.

The BCCI stated that both Rohit and Kohli had requested extra rest by skipping the white-ball matches in South Africa. They might instead play in the two 4-day India A matches against South Africa A and a 3-day practice game between India and India A to prepare for the Test series.
This further leaves the fans in uncertainty about the future of the two senior players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in T20Is, with the T20 World Cup in the West Indies not too far away. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami haven’t played a single T20I since last year’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit. Clearly, their form in the IPL 2024 will matter significantly.
As per the India squads for ODI and T20Is vs South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah will mark his return to Test cricket in South Africa, but he’s been rested from the white-ball matches.

KL Rahul will captain India in the ODI and Suryakumar Yadav in the T20Is against the Proteas. Suryakumar is currently leading a second-string side against Australia at home in a 5-T20I series, which India leads by 2-1.
Hardik Pandya, who started the World Cup 2023 as the vice-captain, is ruled out of the South Africa tour due to the ankle injury that he sustained during the World Cup.
Other interesting selection and non-selection are those of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Jadeja is picked in the T20I squad and is the vice-captain, while Axar is dropped. Axar is picked in the ODI squad, and Jadeja is not.
The ODI squad also sees the return of Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal, along with Mukesh Kumar, Tilak Varma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Avesh Khan, and Deepak Chahar. Three batters—Rinku Singh, Sai Sudharsan, and Rajat Patidar—have received their maiden ODI squad call-ups.
