India Losing to Spin Surprised Ryan ten Doeschate: One of India’s new assistant coaches, Ryan ten Doeschate, has been left surprised by seeing the batters’ struggle against spinners in the ODI series in Sri Lanka.
Earlier this month, the Indian batters succumbed to the Sri Lankan spinners in Colombo in the ODI series as India lost the three-match series 2-0, with one game ending in a tie. Indian batsmen failed to chase down the targets in all three ODIs. India lost 27 wickets to spinners, the most a side has lost to this variety of bowling in a three-ODI series.

Then, captain Rohit Sharma said that they “need to look at it seriously.” This point has been reiterated by former Netherlands great Ryan ten Doeschate, who joined the Men In Blue as an assistant coach along with Abhishek Nayar under the new head coach Gautam Gambhir. He said he didn’t expect that facing spinners for Indian batters would be so tough.
“One of the challenges I wasn’t expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters. We got undone in Sri Lanka,” he told TalkSport Cricket.
Focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England: Ryan ten Doeschate
Ten Doeschate tried to reason out the struggles in Sri Lanka, explaining that the Indian batters’ focus has been so much on overseas assignments in recent years that they fell back on their original strength, which is facing spinners.
The former Dutch all-rounder said, “The mindset of India has been such that they’ve been so desperate to do well overseas. The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England, so we’ve kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength of the Indian team, fall back a little bit. That’s one thing I’m looking forward to helping with—getting to that position where Indians are the best players of spin in the world again.”
The 44-year-old retired in 2021 and straightaway jumped into the coaching scene. He’s been with Kent in England, the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, and the LA Knight Riders in Major League Cricket.
He’s not been brought in by Gambhir to teach the Indian batsmen about technique, but he’s been trusted to handle the mental side of the players, such as preparations and handling high-pressure situations.
“I don’t think much of what we’re going to bring is technical knowledge to these guys. It’s more about mindsets, situational awareness, and how we think they can control certain phases of the game.
“[It’s about] throwing ideas out there, debriefing, and keeping the mental space really good. That’s going to be really important,” Ten Doeschate explained.
