The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Great Britain in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Paris Olympics hockey tournament after suffering from a one-man deficit for much of the match.
India finished second in Pool A to make their way to the quarterfinals. In their last group game, they defeated Australia 3-2, beating the Kangaroos for the first time at the Olympics in 52 years.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where India won a bronze medal in men’s hockey, we defeated Britain in the quarterfinal. And now, Harmanpreet Singh’s men face the European giants once more in the same round. This time at the 2024 Olympics
India Defeat Great Britain In Hockey Quarterfinal
In the first quarter, it was GB who looked to press the Indian defence and attack from the get-go. Britain put a lot of pressure on the Indian backline and even won three penalty corners (PC) but failed to convert. In the last five minutes of the 15-minute quarter, India showed their attacking prowess, winning three PCs but could not score.
In the second minute of the second quarter, Indian defender and first-rusher Amit Rohidas found himself chasing a loose ball. While running, he lost control of the stick in his hand for a moment, which struck Britain’s Will Calnan in the hand.
While the foul did not look intentional, it was deemed to be so by the video referee, who advised the on-field official to hand a red card, which the latter did. Red cards in hockey are extremely rare, doubly so during such a crucial match. But this meant that India had to play the remaining 43 minutes down to 10 men.
But India came back roaring into the match, attacking the British goal for the next five minutes. In the 22nd minute, the Indians won a PC, and captain Harmanpreet converted it for the first goal of the match, 1-0 India.

But then, GB sprung into attack and pressed India until they equalized in the 27th minute, 1-1. With this scoreline, the game went into halftime. With 30 minutes remaining, India had to defend against a British onslaught without one of their best defenders.
The next 15 minutes were a masterclass in defensive hockey by India, who soaked up a lot of pressure from Great Britain’s attacking line but did not concede. While they could not drive the ball down the field to create an attack for themselves, not conceding in such scenarios is almost unheard of.
The same was the case in the final quarter. While India made a couple of circle penetrations of themselves in the last 15 minutes, they had to soak up the pressure for the most part. After what might be the greatest defensive performance in Olympic hockey history, India took the game into a penalty shootout.
At this point, India must be feeling confident. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who has been in excellent form throughout the tournament, was an absolute mountain in front of the Indian goal in this game.
Britain’s James Albery took the first attempt and scored. In response, Harmanpreet Singh foxed English keeper Ollie Payne to bring the score to 1-1. Zachery Wallance then made it 2-1, and India responded with a fine score by Sukhjeet Singh.
Connor Williams took the third shot for Great Britain. As Sreejesh closed the angle, the Williams shot it wide. A cool finish by Lalit Upadhyay meant India had taken a 2-3 lead in the shootout.
So when Britain’s Phil Rope’s attack was stopped by Sreejesh, India just had to score once in their remaining two attempts to go on through to the semi-final. And that was done by Rajukumar Pal, who chipped the ball over the British goalie to win India the game and take the team to the second consecutive Olympic semi-final.
India will now face the winner of the quarterfinal between Germany and Argentina in the semi-final of the men’s hockey tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics and is just one win away from another medal.
