India At Paris Olympics Day 5 Review
The day started with badminton, as PV Sindhu won her game against Kristin Kuuba to top her group in the women’s singles event, making her way into the round of 16. Immediately after, Lakshya Sen achieved the biggest result of the day for India when he defeated world No. 3 and All England Open Champion Jonatan Cristie of Indonesia in straight sets to top his group and make it to the round of 16 in the men’s singles.
Later in the day, HS Prannoy won his match, topped his group, and made it to the round of 16 in the men’s singles. However, on a sadder note for the Indian fans, Lakshya and Prannoy will face off in the round of 16.
On Day 4, Manika Batra became the first Indian paddler to make it to the round of 16 in table tennis at the Olympics when she did so in the women’s singles event. Today, Sreeja Akula joined her after a solid 4-2 set victory over Jian Zeng of Indonesia in the same event.
The two events played their round of 16 matches today. While Batra lost hers in five sets against the No. 8 seed Miu Hirano of Japan, Akula lost hers against world No. 1 and two-time Olympics gold medalist Sun Yingsha, ending India’s participation in table tennis at the 2024 Olympics.
In the equestrian dressage men’s event, India’s Anush Agarwalla finished ninth in his pool and failed to make it to the next round. Meanwhile, in the men’s individual sculls rowing event, India’s Balraj Pawar finished sixth in the first semi-final and bowed out of the competition.
Lovlina Borgohain opened her Paris Olympics campaign with a unanimous victory over Sunniva Hofstad of Norway in the women’s 75 kg boxing event. She will now face the No. 1 seed and silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, Li Qian of China.
In archery, Deepika Kumari kicked off her women’s individual tournament with a close win over Estonia’s Reena Parnat in a match that went to the tiebreaker shot. She then beat Quinty Roeffen of the Netherlands 6-2. In a very unusual sight at the professional level, the Dutch archer shot a 0-point shot during the round of 32 matches. Deepika is not in the round of 16.
Tarundeep Rai also had his round of 64 match in men’s individual archery against Tom Hall of Great Britain, losing what was one of the closest games of archery not to go to a tiebreaker.
Finally, in shooting, India’s Swapnil Kusale finished seventh in the qualifying round of the men’s 50m rifle three positions event and will compete in the final for a medal on August 1. On the other hand, India’s Rajeshwari Kumari and Shreyasi Singh failed to make it to the final of the women’s trap event.
The likes of Nikhat Zareen, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and the men’s hockey team will be in action for India on Day 6 of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
